Climate Targetsetting

To limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5C, Delhaize requests all its suppliers to commit to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The SBTi is a partnership between CDP, UN Global Compact, WWF and World Resources Institute. The partnership drives ambitious climate action in the private sector by enabling organizations to set science-based emissions reduction targets. Organizations can apply at SBTi for their climate targets to be validated and approved. Ahold Delhaize has set Science-Based Targets as well and wishes for its suppliers to do the same.

Signing the SBTi commitment letter

Delhaize requests all its suppliers to commit to the SBTi. Register here to start the SBTi commitment process

Exception: For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs, being those with up to 500 employees and not part of a parent company), this request to sign the SBTi Commitment Letter by 30 September 2023 is not required.
instead, we ask SME suppliers to prepare to have climate targets validated through the SBTi's "streamlined route for SMEs" available here.
We would like to receive your signed intention to commit as an SME at carbon@delhaize.be.

Ultimately, we want all our suppliers (SME and non-SME) to have SBTi-validated climate targets by 30 September 2025.

Next steps after SBTi commitment

‎After signing and submitting the commitment letter, you will have 24 months to calculate your organizational carbon footprint (Scope 1-2 and Scope 3) and to develop and submit climate targets in line with the 1.5°C global warming scenario.

1. Develop your targets in line with SBTi’s science-based criteria.
2. Submit your target for validation.
3. Announce your target and inform stakeholders.
4. Disclose your emissions annually and monitor progress.

Guidance documents

  • ‎For companies with significant share of revenue from Forestry, Land-use and Agriculture (FLAG), the SBTi has created a sector-specific guidance (FLAG guidance), available here.
  • For guidance or questions related to the SBTi process, we refer to the Science Based Targets initiative.
  • For guidance around carbon footprint calculations, we refer to Carbon Footprinting.
